What does the GTA trailer tell us?

Mike | News, Console, Ps3, XBOX 360, Previews, Video Games | Saturday, March 31st, 2007

Fixing mirror

Upon the release of the GTA trailer we somewhat expected that cloud of mystery to disappear. However upon watching the trailer only the beauty of the game was truly revealed. Oh, and a mysterious man that says, “Life is complicated, I’ve killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here things will be different.”

However some eagle eye fans can help us speculate and attempt to answer some of the questions we might have. These fans tell us that,

  • While the city appears to be like New York it is actually Liberty City from GTA III. You can find the words “Liberty City” on a tanker, ferry and LCPD likely stands for “Liberty City Police Department”
  • The game is based in at least the year 2000. The cars seem to give that away as you can see what looks like a BMW and some nice sports cars
  • GTA IV uses the amazing RAGE engine. Rockstar told Gamespot, We can confirm that all footage in the trailer was captured directly from 720p gameplay running real time in our Rage engine on a next-gen gaming console.” Awesome, it looks really good.
  • An ad in the trailer states, “Visit Vice City- $300″. Will we be able to visit Vice City? Or is this just a little tease? Will it still look the same?
  • Everything seems to have improved physics as we might expect. You can even spot a driver fixing his rear view mirror. Little tiny details
  • Is this Russian guy a main character? Our best friend? Or our enemy?

If you have any other little speculations that you can spot from the trailer or any other reputable source, please share! Rockstar says that the game should be shipped on October 19 for both Xbox 360 and PS3. Woohoo!

XBox 360 to get Rosetta@Home?

Mike | News, Console, XBOX 360, Video Games, Industry News | Saturday, March 31st, 2007

Rosetta@Home
There’s more than one Folding@Home type project out there. It seems that the XBox 360 owners were a little jealous that they couldn’t help cure diseases too. It could be possible that soon enough they won’t have to be so jealous anymore. Could the XBox 360 get Rosetta@Home? A project similar to Folding@Home? Those XBox 360 powerhouses need to be put to some work.
However we must keep in mind that this is all speculation based on the following points,

  • Bill Gates is a huge supporter in the fight against AIDS and believes that a cure can be found in his lifetime. Rosetta@Home can make that dream come true.
  • Rosetta@Home received 10 million US dollars from the Gates Foundation last year for HIV research.
  • October 2006, Rosetta@Home head scientist and developer David Baker said on the projects message boards that they have been talking with Microsoft regarding XBOX 360 consoles

We know nothing more about this little project. However its worth informing you about.

GTA Trailer has arrived

Mike | News, Console, Ps3, XBOX 360, Video Games | Saturday, March 31st, 2007

GTA 4 Trailer

The well awaited GTA 4 trailer has arrived. This trailer has been a mystery for some while and people who went looking for it were just teased with the letters IV and a timer counting down until the trailers release. Such people will not be confused anymore.

The confusion, mystery and wonder was all started for viewers watching the FX channel when instead of a typical infomercial they were greeted with 30 minute advertising that featured the same IV and timer countdown. However it was very obvious to anyone that had played GTA that the IV stood for Grand Theft Auto IV.

A week later, we will show you the trailer.

The trailer on Youtube’s quality kinda sucks. You can view a higher quality verion on Rockstars official site, www.rockstargames.com/IV/

No 80GB PS3 coming

Mike | News, Console, Ps3, Video Games, Industry News | Friday, March 30th, 2007

ps3_controller_0021.jpg

The rumors that evolved from a filing made regarding an FFC filing by Sony have been recently shot down by Sony.

The rumors were all worded to speculate that an 80GB PS3 was in the making.

The filling speaks about an “original model codenamed CECHA 01 and about “an addition of model codenamed CECHE 01, which are to be separated “by the difference of the capacity of the hard drive.

And now the spectacular part: it appears that CECHA 01 (“original model) refers to the high end 60GB PS3, while the CECHE01 (“addition model) refers to the revised console, with 80GB hard drive.

However Sony has responded to these rumors and speculations saying that there are no plans whatsoever for an 80GB model. Sony spoke to Eurogamer.net regarding these rumors and said that, “The 80GB we’re not making any comment on, but we don’t have any plans at the moment.”

These rumors followed Microsofts announcement regarding a 120GB hard drive in the Xbox 360.

Olympics
Ah man! This is sweet. The first ever Mario and Sonic game together. Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games is a full fledged competition you’ve been waiting for since the SNES vs. Genesis days. You’ll be able to play as characters from Mario and Sonic series. It will be coming for the Wii and the DS this Holiday Season 2007. Here’s a few words at the Nintendo Press Release.

TOKYO (March 28, 2007) - SEGA® Corporation and Nintendo Co. Ltd. today made a historical announcement that two of the biggest icons in the entertainment industry, Mario™ and Sonic™, are joining forces to star in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Developed for the Wii™ video game system and the Nintendo DS™ system, this momentous agreement marks the first time these two renowned stars have appeared together in a game.

Published by SEGA across Europe and North America, and published by Nintendo in the Japanese market, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games will be available for Holiday 2007 and is licensed through a worldwide partnership with International Sports Multimedia (ISM), the exclusive interactive entertainment software licensee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, players will compete in events that take place in environments based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Using a supporting cast of characters from the amazing worlds of both Mario and Sonic, gamers will be able to compete as or against a range of lovable personalities including Mario, Sonic, Luigi™, Knuckles™, Yoshi®, Tails™ and more. Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favorite character will allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming heat, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.“We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking title, said Hisao Oguchi, President and Chief Operating Officer, SEGA Corporation. “For the first time, two of the world’s greatest games’ characters come together to compete in the world’s greatest sporting event and we couldn’t be more excited.

“Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games, says Shigeru Miyamoto, Senior Managing Director and General Manager, Entertainment Analysis and Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.. “In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?

“The Olympic Games represent the true spirit of competition and passion, said Raymond Goldsmith, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ISM. “Bringing together intensely competitive and fun characters like Mario and Sonic in an Olympic setting helps showcase the sports of the Olympic Games in a new and compelling way for all generations.

This is great news, almost as good as Brawl. I’m getting the Wii and DS versions.

Peace,

Casino Royale movie sells 100,000 Blu-Ray units

Mike | News, Industry News | Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Casino Royale Bluray

Casino Royale is the first Hi-Def disc title to sell 100,000 of itself. It’s not surprising that Casino Royale broke through this milestone considering it also busted through as the first Hi-Def disc to sell in the Top 10 on Amazon’s DVD list and it demolished Nielsen VideoScan’s Blu-ray chart its first week out.

Sony Pictures confirmed the milestone in a press release recently. Just another sign that Blu-ray is coming out on top against HD-DVD. It’s the first to hit the 100,000 mark on a single title compared to HD-DVD and reached the milestone than the original DVD did back when DVD was fighting for top spot.

The film’s director, Martin Campbell, commented, “It’s just unbelievable. Clearly, it’s fantastic. The comparison between standard def DVD and Blu-ray is quite stunning and quite transparent to the master. It’s precisely what would make me want to buy a copy.”

“Blu-ray has accounted for approximately 70 percent of the high-definition market since the first week in January, and as that market share continues to grow, we are dedicated to providing consumers with the content they crave,” added Mr. Bishop.

These figures will certainly help the PS3 in sales as it is sometimes thought of as a cheap Blu-ray player. The format and the PS3 are in this technology battle together.

Nintendo bumps back against modchips

Mike | News, Console, Wii, Video Games, Modchips | Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Wiimotherboard

The above picture shows changes to the Wii motherboard. The Wii motherboard has been changed to fight against modchips being used in the Wii. While modchip developers claim that Wii modchips are made for legitimate backups they are often also used to illegal purposes. Therefore Nintendo is doing whatever they can do to combat modchips being installed in the Wii.

Changes to the Wii motherboard include new positioning of contacts on the motherboard(as pointed out by the three arrows in the above picture) and reducing the spaces between contact points(making it tougher to solder to the motherboard).

However the greatest problem facing chip manufacturers includes changing the chip packaging technique from TSOP, where connections are visible on the edges, to BGA where the connections are hidden underneath. This would make connections tough to reach.

This story should be considered just a simple rumor for now while we wait for some confirmation from other sources.
