Pandora’s Battery

Mike | News | Friday, August 24th, 2007

N00bz has stepped up the plate and nailed one again, with their release of “Pandora’s Battery”. An unbricker for all PSP’s.

Anyway - make sure to read the readme.txt in this release for how to use it, but in brief it works like this:

  1. You run a program on a homebrew-enabled PSP that will convert a standard PSP battery into a jigkick battery. Note that you can’t then use that battery normally - so you should use a spare one.
  2. You run a program to generate the unbricker memory stick image, built from the v1.5 update EBOOT (note that this, and the custom IPL, means the release is completely free of Sony copyright materials).
  3. You run some programs on a PC to install the image to your memory stick.

Now, you have a battery/memory stick pair that works just like the famous jigkick combination (but better) - just insert them into any PSP (even a brick) and the PSP will be reinstalled with the v1.5 firmware. As far as we know, this will continue to work for all future firmwares.

Thank these guys for their great work,

Playstation Eye

Similar to the old Eyetoy, but a whole lot sleeker and functional.

“The PlayStation Eye, in essence, is a digital camera attachable to the PS3. It can recognize visual patterns, as exhibited with the game Eye of Judgement, and can sense movements and distance in a 3D space. That, according to Sony, gives it more potential than a Wiimote.”

Resident Evil 4 Review

Frazz | News | Friday, August 24th, 2007

Having played Resident Evil 4 for Gamecube, you may think this is just a shinier version with rubbish controls. It is not. It is one of the most sophisticated and well-made games on the Wii.This is the first evidence I’ve come across that proves the Wii can handle FPS, and handle them well.
Using the same shooting system as Resi 4 GC, you use the B button to go into aiming mode, and from there use the Wiimote to aim and the A button to shoot. It’s brilliant, improving on the GC version’s worthy controls and making gameplay much more fun, but giving you a sense of confidence along with the more freestyle aiming. It’s simply not as scary as using the Control Stick on GC because you have more control over the aiming with the Wiimote.
The set-pieces and boss battles are intense, and there are parts of this game that will astound you. For example at one point you are surrounded by a wave of enemies in a cabin. You and an ally are preparing to fight for your lives and the constant groans of the enemy are near. The sheer bombardement and thrill of fighting of the ghoulish plaga is incredible.
Althought mainly an action game, there are RPG elements in there too; a pretty cliche, yet thick story line and gun-tune-ups. Not exactly Oblivion, but the gun upgrades can really effect your play.
Upon beating the main storyline of the game (which itself is fairly beefy at 20+ hours) for the first time you unlock “Seperate Ways”, “Assignment Ada” and “Mercenaries”. All of these are thorough side-tracks, throw in Hard Mode and you’ve got a very big game indeed. Mercenaries is very re-playable, and so are the other modes to an extent, so I wouldn’t be surprised at a play time near 100 hours.

Visuals: What was good on the GC is buffed up and lovely on the Wii. Contribute greatly to the atmosphere. 8/10.

Gameplay: Best shooting on the Wii, good varied bosses and plenty of puzzles and frights. 9.3/10

Lifespan: As I said, many unlockables and very re-playable, bare minimum 40 hours. 8.9/10.

Best Bit: Although the game is a string of best bits, getting your head sawed off your shoulders definitely stands out.

Worst Bit: Regenerators. One of the scariest and toughest baddies ever.

Overall: 9.2/10. Long, intense game that you’ll see through to the end. Essential Wii software.

E3 Hardware Releases

Frazz | News | Friday, August 24th, 2007

This year the slightly toned-down E3 didn’t show off any new consoles, but a lot of new hardware was revealed.

Microsoft showed off thier black XBOX360 Elite, which includes a 120GB hard drive and comes bundled with a controller and headset for £329.99. The Elite was released in April in the US, has a 24th August release planned in Europe and 11 October in Japan.

A Halo 3 version of this will be available with no technical improvments but a nice cosmetic change.

Sony told us about the PSP “Slim” which is 33% lighter than the original and 19% thinner. It will be able to charge via USB and connections to TVs can be made to view content.

Nintendo didn’t announce any new hardware, but two new peripherals were mentioned: The Wii Zapper and the WiiFit Board.

Owners of Microsoft’s XBox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 will have to wait for the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV release. According to GameSpot.com, it’s being postponed until the second quarter of the 2008 fiscal-year which begins at the first of February. If you’re as disappointed as I am, post your comments.
