Resident Evil 4 Review
Having played Resident Evil 4 for Gamecube, you may think this is just a shinier version with rubbish controls. It is not. It is one of the most sophisticated and well-made games on the Wii.This is the first evidence I’ve come across that proves the Wii can handle FPS, and handle them well.
Using the same shooting system as Resi 4 GC, you use the B button to go into aiming mode, and from there use the Wiimote to aim and the A button to shoot. It’s brilliant, improving on the GC version’s worthy controls and making gameplay much more fun, but giving you a sense of confidence along with the more freestyle aiming. It’s simply not as scary as using the Control Stick on GC because you have more control over the aiming with the Wiimote.
The set-pieces and boss battles are intense, and there are parts of this game that will astound you. For example at one point you are surrounded by a wave of enemies in a cabin. You and an ally are preparing to fight for your lives and the constant groans of the enemy are near. The sheer bombardement and thrill of fighting of the ghoulish plaga is incredible.
Althought mainly an action game, there are RPG elements in there too; a pretty cliche, yet thick story line and gun-tune-ups. Not exactly Oblivion, but the gun upgrades can really effect your play.
Upon beating the main storyline of the game (which itself is fairly beefy at 20+ hours) for the first time you unlock “Seperate Ways”, “Assignment Ada” and “Mercenaries”. All of these are thorough side-tracks, throw in Hard Mode and you’ve got a very big game indeed. Mercenaries is very re-playable, and so are the other modes to an extent, so I wouldn’t be surprised at a play time near 100 hours.
Visuals: What was good on the GC is buffed up and lovely on the Wii. Contribute greatly to the atmosphere. 8/10.
Gameplay: Best shooting on the Wii, good varied bosses and plenty of puzzles and frights. 9.3/10
Lifespan: As I said, many unlockables and very re-playable, bare minimum 40 hours. 8.9/10.
Best Bit: Although the game is a string of best bits, getting your head sawed off your shoulders definitely stands out.
Worst Bit: Regenerators. One of the scariest and toughest baddies ever.
Overall: 9.2/10. Long, intense game that you’ll see through to the end. Essential Wii software.
